area-logoA new plan will be co-financed by the Italian Ministry for the Environment and Sea Protection, aimed at promoting the use of renewable energies while sharply reducing CO2 emissions. ENERPLAN is developed by Trieste Science Park AREA for energy production and efficient use.

The idea is to promote the use of renewable and alternative energy sources, reducing the costs of energy management and, simultaneously, cutting harmful emissions in civil, industrial and commercial construction applications as well as in agriculture. In the future this may also encourage the development of new industrial initiatives, with beneficial effects on the competitiveness of the areas involved.

The plan includes the selection and development of ideas and innovative businesses in the fields of renewable energy and energy saving by building model facilities to serve also as laboratories for technological development and industrial experimentation. Here universities and primary schools, research institutions, companies and public administrations can learn and compare the technical, environmental and economic results of the innovations proposed.

ENERPLAN is divided into eight experimental development projects, to be applied to buildings in the sites of Trieste Science Park, that will be "dressed" with technologies aimed at improving energy management, thus becoming real pilot projects.

The Italian Ministry of Environment acknowledged ENERPLAN's value and signed an agreement with Trieste Science Park AREA providing for the co-financing of 50% of the costs, amounting to 6,805,000 euros.

"I am confident that the agreement with the Ministry of Environment - said the President of AREA Science Park, Giancarlo Michellone - is a first key step that will allow us to build other plants in Friuli Venezia Giulia (Trieste's region, editor's note) and later in all Italy and internationally."

"ENERPLAN is a strategic pilot project of the Ministry of Environment - said Corrado Clini, Director General of the Ministry for the Environment - as it allows the experimentation of innovative solutions in key areas such as energy production from renewable sources, environmentally friendly building and energy recovery in productive activities. The technologies and management systems that will be developed within ENERPLAN will be a model for the entire national energy system, also considering Italy's adoption of the strategy for energy security and reduction of emissions."

"The agreement between the Ministry of Environment and AREA Science Park is characterized by specific objectives and initiatives to create competitive industrial projects in many strategic sectors for the Italian economy, proving that environmental protection is also an opportunity for development", said Italy's Under-Secretary for Environment Mr. Roberto Menia.
